Toby trained in puppetry at the Central School of Speech and Drama and now works as a puppetry performer, designer, maker and director.

As a performer, theatre credits include: originating the role of Joey in War Horse (National Theatre & West End), Angelo (Little Angel Theatre), Hospitalworks (Theatre-Rites) and development workshops for Tori Amos’s The Light Princess and Or You Could Kiss Me (National Theatre Studio), The Chimp Project (Handspring Puppet Company), Satyagraha (Improbable & English National Opera) and Mahabharata (Sadler’s Wells). Film and TV credits include: Alice (Ruby Films & Film4), Mongrels (BBC Three), The Insiders (Channel 4) and The Futureheads’ music video Walking Backwards.

As a designer and maker, Toby has created puppets for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Royal Opera House), The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and Peter Pan (Chichester Festival Theatre), Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Young Vic & Southbank Centre), Petite Rouge and Disney’s The Jungle Book (The Scoop Amphitheatre) and Follies (Royal Theatre Northampton). He was also a freelance maker and crew for the mask and puppet department at The Lion King (Lyceum Theatre).

Credits as a puppetry director include: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Gentle Giant (Royal Opera House), Liberty (Shakespeare’s Globe), Room on the Broom (Tall Stories) and The Firework-Maker’s Daughter (Birmingham Stage Company).
